The most common way people find names is with apps like "Hope Chest", "Take a Name", other "data mining" apps. Many of these names will have data problems, or relationship errors that need to be corrected before you request the ordinances. Even the emails sent from FamilySearch that state you have a temple ready name don't mean that the person is actually ready to have their name requested.
Would you like to learn how to make sure that those names are truly ready for temple work? There is a simple thought process that will help you understand how to look for discrepancies in dates, relationships, and duplicate names.
What we will cover in this class:
Is this really my relative? (We can only request those that are related to us)
Show how to look for duplicates and then merge them
How to standardize the person's information, like dates, places, etc.
Review the relationships. Do the birth, death, marriage dates make sense give the relationships within the family?
How to look AT and search FOR sources that document that this person actually existed
Relook at duplicates again
Reserve and print the name
Each person should come to this class WITH at least one temple name they found prior to this class. We will not have time in the class to help find names for them. This is also the responsibility of the Ward Temple & Family History Consultant. Utilize these consultants to help them find names.
Ensure that each person comes with their usernames & passwords. We do not have the ability to help them recover this information if they do not have it due to time constraints.
If your group is new to Family Tree, we can help by teaching some basic navigation skills, learn the menus, check their "Settings", and if time, even attach a "Record Hint". We have regular Family Tree classes in a series of 6 lessons that go into much more detail about Family Tree. This activity would be basically the first lesson of this series.
Ensure that each person comes with their usernames & passwords. Without these, there is no access to FamilySearch, nor the 3rd party apps. We do not have the ability to help them recover this information if they do not have it due to time constraints.
Perhaps you would like to come and see what our library has for resources. We can show you our computer labs, scanning and digitizing equipment, the two 55" large interactive touch screen TVs etc.
We should have our family interview room and activity center up and running in early 2019.
We can offer our computer lab so that your Ward Consultants can teach your youth how to find some temple names. Many wards may only have a couple of consultants and so it is best if the group size is kept small. We would recommend 1 consultant or adult for two youth maximum to avoid the boredom issues that come from not having enough supervised instruction.
Our library has dedicated Wednesday evenings for indexing activities and support. We have specialists in indexing that are available to help individuals. If you wish to schedule a group on a different evening, we will need to make special arrangements with these specialists.
We currently have two computer classrooms. We have 23 computer workstations in Lab 1, and 16 in Lab 2. There is also an instructor computer & projector in each classroom.
We will assign your group to a specific lab depending on the size of your group, and availability of missionaries, once we receive your activity request.
Plan to be at the library by 6:45 PM. To make the best use of time, we like to start by 7:00 PM. That implies that the group is there in the lab, logged into their computers and ready to go. The general library closes by 8:00 PM.
If you need to request cancellation of your activity, please do so at least a week ahead of time to allow others to schedule an activity time.
Please note that you are NOT SCHEDULED until you receive a confirmation email. We will send you a confirmation email within 24-48 hours. If you do not hear from us, please check your SPAM folder, and if still no email from us, please contact us at the library (208-524-5291).
The calendar below shows the dates and times that are currently reserved. It does NOT show "OPEN" or available dates. Pick a Wed/Thu date you would like to reserve. If it does not show on the calendar you can reserve that date and time. Please note that Tuesday evenings are reserved for Youth Activities.
